Unfortunately the limitation on speed is moreso a browser issue that the component.  I could probably deal with it further in Java, but it would take a while before I could commit to that too.  The scroll can be paused by running your mouse over the module, then a user can take their time to read it.

In regards to the smileys, I will add it to the request list for hiding certain ones.
